Everett Launches a Free Electric Van to the Connolly Center for Residents 60 and Up. Reservations Open Monday, Rides Start Wednesday

Everett residents 60 and older will be able to ride free to and from the Edward G. Connolly Center starting Wednesday, November 4, on a new all-electric van run by the city’s Council on Aging. The Connolly Center begins taking reservations Monday, November 2, at 617-544-6008.

The city announced the service Thursday. It is the first dedicated van to the senior center at 90 Chelsea Street in more than 30 years, and it is meant to remove the one obstacle that keeps many older residents away from its meals, exercise classes and programs: getting there.

“For many of our older residents, the Connolly Center is an important part of their daily lives, but getting there isn’t always easy,” Mayor Robert J. Van Campen said. “Whether it’s attending an exercise class, enjoying a meal or simply spending time with friends, transportation shouldn’t be what keeps someone from participating.”

How it works

  • Who: Everett residents age 60 and older.
  • Where: Between home or designated senior housing buildings and the Connolly Center.
  • When: Monday through Thursday. Morning pickups begin about 8:15 a.m. at senior housing stops around the city, with home pickup available on request. Return trips from the center begin about 2:30 p.m. Times shift with reservations, weather and special events.
  • How to book: Call the Connolly Center at 617-544-6008, Monday through Thursday between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., at least two days before the ride. Say whether you need help getting on or off. A staff member calls back to confirm the pickup time.
  • Cost: Free.

The van seats six passengers plus two riders in wheelchairs, for eight in all, and has a lift for anyone who uses a wheelchair or walker or has trouble with the step. Drivers must complete CPR and AED, wheelchair lift, passenger safety, defensive driving and emergency management training.

What it cost

The vehicle cost $58,000. The City Council approved $50,000 from the capital stabilization account in 2024, and an $8,000 grant from the state Executive Office of Aging and Independence covered the rest.

“This service will make a meaningful difference for residents who rely on the Connolly Center,” said Dale A. Palma, director of the Council on Aging. “We’re excited to help more older adults take advantage of everything the Center has to offer.”
